The 3 Video Production Phases You NEED to Know

I’m often asked, “If you want to make a video, don’t you just get out the camera?” Whilst you could always shoot and wing it, the result is hardly ever great. That’s why it's important to understand the three phases of video production and the importance of planning. But let me explain.

Introduction: The 3 Stages of Video Production

There are three stages of video production: pre-production, production and post-production. The more work you do upfront, from creative development to scriptwriting and storyboarding, the better the result will be by the end.

Pre-production is the stage in which the producer and director come up with the idea for the video. From determining its scope and budget to writing scripts and preparing storyboards.

The production stage is when all of these elements come together to film the video. The final stage of video production is post-production where editors cut the footage together, add sound effects or music, titles or transitions to complete the final product.

Stage 1: Pre-production

Pre-production is the stage in which the producer and director come up with the idea for the video, determine its scope and budget, set a timeline and location, cast actors and crew members, write scripts and prepare storyboards.

  • A creative concept is the foundation of the video, defined by its purpose, audience and goals. It dictates what type of video will be created and what content will be used.
  • The video script is a document that outlines the story and dialogue of a video. It includes everything from the scene, location and character descriptions, to voiceover and dialogue.
  • A storyboard is a visual representation of the video flow. Panels depict different scenes with accompanying text that describes what will happen in each scene. Everything from actors, props, camera angles and any other elements that need to be considered for production.

Stage 2: Production

The production phase involves getting that camera out and filming the story. With every story being different, so is every production. From scripted scenes to an in-depth interview or ad-lib event filming, everything from the audio and visual quality, to the lighting, styling and extras is carefully considered in the production phase.

The audio quality is the sound of the production, including any sound effects, music and dialogue. Lighting and visual quality are the lighting and visual aspects of a production.

In order to create an authentic experience for viewers, it is important that these three elements are of high quality. For example, if you are watching a show from a camera phone which has poor lighting or audio quality then it will be difficult to enjoy the show.

Stage 3: Post-Production

This is where the magic happens, stitching together highly engaging footage to ensure your video production is on message and story-focused. Everything from colour grading, sound mixing, motion graphics and animation, no detail is too small.

Here are some different elements of post-production and what they mean:

  • Video editing is the process of manipulating and rearranging video shots to create a final edit.
  • Sound editing involves balancing noise levels, adding sound effects and removing background noises, with the aim of making the audio whole.
  • Colour grading is the process of improving the appearance of an image, adjusting the colours to create a stylistic effect.
  • Visual effects is the process by which imagery is created, manipulated, or enhanced for any video.
  • Motion graphics is animation with text being a major component. Essentially, it’s an animated graphic design.
